EM2 in the Pub Part 11: space communications

How will we send selfies from Mars back to our friends on Earth? How will we call into those important work meetings?

Dmitrios Tsifakis takes us through the practicalities of getting information back and forth across the solar system. Spoiler: it’s not that easy…

EM2 is the Earth to Moon to Mars projects, to develop and test technology for humankind’s colonisation of other world. NASA has identified a moon base as the springboard to a mars base, so Boswell Technologies is spearheading a grass roots effort to test as much technology as possible before it goes into space.

This pub night in Canberra brought together experts from a range of sciences to discuss the issues colonisers on the Moon might face.

Filmed at Smiths Alternative Canberra, May 2021. MCed by Dr Phil Dooley.

EM2 in the Pub Part 7: Space Oddity

No space science show is complete without David Bowie.

Professor Rod and Dr Phil take you through the blast off and beyond – and there are some lovely harmonies added by the audience!

EM2 in the Pub Part 10: human health in space

Our bodies depend on air but also on gravity to a surprising extent. Dr Emma Tucker, medical doctor and space medicine researcher, takes us through the many gruesome ways space can kill or maim humans…

EM2 in the Pub Part 9: Crops in Space

Crop scientist Dr Tory Clarke from the ANU and University of Tasmania takes us through the challenges of growing plants in space. Some things are easier than you’d think. Others, not so much.

EM2 in the Pub, part 8: designing a vacuum dome

Rod’s PhD student Matt Shadwell has been tasked with designing the dome that will house the moon simulation environment.

In this video he shares the challenges and solutions for making a vacuum tight vessel that is metres across!

EM2 in the Pub, part 5: oxygen is weird

Dr Phil is horrified that Earth is shrouded in a corrosive, dangerous chemical called oxygen.

It’s unstable and it burns things. But that’s useful for us to burn our food.

If we lived in a stable unreactive gas atmosphere we wouldn’t be able to get energy to power our life. An off-the-cuff rant as part of EM2 in the Pub.
